There are 50,000 vouchers. Not 500,000. Not unlimited. Fifty thousand — and they are going fast.
I do not say that to create panic. I say it because that number matters. South Africa has millions of unemployed youth and millions more who are underemployed. When a programme like this opens up, the people who move quickly are the ones who benefit. The ones who bookmark it and come back later are usually the ones who find the door closed.
So let me tell you what this is, how it works, and what you need to do today — not next week.
What the YES x Microsoft AI Skills Initiative Actually Is
The Youth Employment Service — YES — and Microsoft South Africa have partnered to give South Africans free access to Microsoft's official certification pathways. Not a short course. Not a participation certificate. An actual globally recognised Microsoft certification that costs thousands of rand normally — completely free if you qualify by completing the programme.
The official portal is yes-aiskills.co.za. That is where everything happens. You register there, access your learning pathway, complete your modules on Microsoft Learn, pass a practice assessment, and then claim your voucher to write the official certification exam at no cost to you.
I want to be clear about something because this space is full of misleading content: this is a real, verified programme. I checked the official portal directly. The registration link is active. The courses are live. This is not a WhatsApp forward. It is not a scam dressed up with Microsoft's logo. It is the real thing — and the difference between this and the fake learnerships we warned about on this site before is that everything happens through an official Microsoft-connected platform with a verified South African government partner.
Who It Is For — and Who It Is Not For
The programme is open to all South Africans. Unemployed youth. Career changers. Working professionals who need to stay relevant. You do not need a degree. You do not need prior tech experience. You do not need Azure knowledge to start the beginner courses.
What you do need is commitment — and I want to emphasise this because the portal itself says it clearly: getting your free certification requires completing all your modules. You cannot register and disappear for three months and expect a voucher to be waiting. You complete the work, you pass the practice exam at 70% or higher, and then you claim. In that order.
From what I have seen with free certification programmes in South Africa, the dropout rate is high. Most people register. Far fewer actually finish. That is not a criticism — life is hard here, data is expensive, load shedding is real. But it does mean that the people who push through to completion are a smaller group than the registration numbers suggest. If you start this, make a plan to finish it. Even if it takes two weeks instead of one day.
The 8 Certification Pathways — Which One Is Right for You
| Certification | Level | Time to Complete | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI Business Professional | Beginner | 4.5 hours | Anyone — fastest route to a Microsoft credential |
| AI Transformation Leader | Beginner | 4.75 hours | People in management or team leadership roles |
| Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900) | Beginner | Self-paced | Anyone wanting cloud computing foundations |
| Azure Data Fundamentals | Beginner | Self-paced | Those interested in data and analytics careers |
| Security, Compliance and Identity | Beginner | Self-paced | Entry point into cybersecurity careers |
| GitHub Foundations | Beginner | Self-paced | Anyone wanting developer-adjacent skills |
| Azure AI Engineer Associate | Intermediate | Self-paced | Those with some technical background in AI |
| Azure Security Engineer Associate | Intermediate | Self-paced | Those building toward cybersecurity specialist roles |
My honest recommendation for most South Africans starting from zero: go with AI Business Professional first. Four and a half hours. Completable in a single day if you are focused. No coding required. It teaches you how to use generative AI and Microsoft 365 Copilot in real work situations — which is exactly what employers are asking for right now even in non-technical roles. That is your quickest route to a Microsoft credential on your CV.
After that, if cybersecurity interests you, the Security, Compliance and Identity Fundamentals course is your stepping stone. South Africa has a genuine shortage of cybersecurity skills and the salaries reflect that. That path is longer but the reward at the end is worth the investment of time.

How to Claim Your Voucher — The Exact Steps
This is the part most articles rush through. I am going to slow down here because the process has a few steps that trip people up.
Step 1 — Register at yes-aiskills.co.za. You will need a South African ID number and a valid email address. You will also need a Microsoft account — if you do not have one, create one free at microsoft.com before you start. Trying to register without one will slow you down.
Step 2 — Choose your certification pathway from the 8 available options. Do not choose based on what sounds impressive. Choose based on what you will actually complete. A finished AI Business Professional certificate beats an abandoned Azure AI Engineer course every time.
Step 3 — Complete all your Microsoft Learn modules. This is where most people drop off. The modules are self-paced and available on the Microsoft Learn platform. You link your Microsoft Learn profile to the YES initiative during registration. On days when load shedding hits, download what you can in advance. Many modules have readable text content that does not require streaming video.
Step 4 — Pass the practice assessment at 70% or above. This is not the final exam — it is the practice test that qualifies you for the voucher. Take it seriously. If you fail the first time, you can retry. Use the retry as a learning opportunity, not a reason to quit.
Step 5 — Claim your voucher through the Claim Certificate section on yes-aiskills.co.za. Once you have your voucher, you book the official Microsoft certification exam through Pearson VUE or Certiport. The exam can be written online from home. No exam centre required.
Once certified — add it to LinkedIn under Licences and Certifications. List the issuing organisation as Microsoft. Not YES. Not Microsoft Learn. Microsoft. That is what recruiters scan for.
The Reality Check: What This Will Not Do For You
A Microsoft certification will not hand you a job. I need to say that directly because too many programmes in South Africa are marketed as if completing a course is the same as getting employed. It is not.
What the certification does is remove a barrier. It gives you a verifiable, globally recognised credential that proves you completed a structured Microsoft-backed learning programme. That is not nothing. In a market where most applicants have similar CVs, a Microsoft certification in AI or cloud fundamentals is a genuine differentiator — especially for roles in banking, retail operations, logistics, and any company that runs on Microsoft 365.
The honest reality is that you still need to apply. You still need to interview. You still need to show what you can do with the skills beyond the certificate itself. Build something. Help a local business use Copilot. Document what you learned and how you applied it. That practical layer on top of the certification is what actually moves recruiters.
And one more thing — the vouchers are limited to 50,000. That sounds like a lot until you consider how many South Africans are actively searching for free digital skills programmes right now. Register first. Complete the work second. Worry about everything else after that.
This pairs directly with the Google Career Certificates we covered earlier this month — between the two programmes, you can build a genuinely credible digital skills profile for free. And once those skills are in place, our guide on getting a remote job with no experience shows you what to do next.
I grew up in Venda with no computer, no data, and no one showing me these opportunities existed. I built everything I have on a smartphone because that was what I had. The tools available to South African youth in 2026 are incomparably better than what existed in 2014. A free Microsoft certification accessible from your phone is not a small thing. Do not treat it like one.
